Mark is half the backbone of the Loose Change rhythm section

Q. Why'd you pick drums ?

A. Well, guitar was too common and wind instruments are not my bag ... baby. And to a 7-year-old, drums are always cool. So I started at around 7 years old. I'm not as good as I should be for someone who's been playing for X years (where X is more than 20 and less than 30) because it's been an on-and-off hobby of mine. I've had technical training at the Conservatoire de Musique for about 2 years and private lessons also. Now I'm the one giving lessons... go figure.

Q. What do you do when you're not drumming ?

A. Hmmmm, well I can't practice because my drums are at Garry's place. So if you ever see me air drumming while driving, it means that I'm learning a new song. Oh. . .the question was when I'm NOT drumming. . . well, you'll find me sitting behind a desk from 9 to 5 programming. Yep, I'm a computer nerd. As for the rest of my time... it's always unscripted. . . going wherever the wind takes me.

Q. What equipment do you use ?

A. I'm not really picky about my drums. I've had the same set for about 17 years and it hasn't failed me yet. I've had to upgrade my seat and throne as the bacon starts to grow to get something a little more stable that can handle the extra tonnage. But that's about it. As long as my toms and cymbals are within reach and I can get a decent sound out of my kit, I'm happy. My first drum set was a black Bollero by Pearl, and the 17 year old kit that I bang on now is a Pearl also. Cymbals are Zildjian and Sabian, heads are Evans and Remo and sticks are Vic Firth 5A's and 7N's.

Q. How did you get hooked up with Loose Change ?

A. I didn't get "hooked up". We're the original members! Garry, Michel and I used to all work in the same company playing in a no-name band and our singer at the time was another co-worker. We did a couple of corporate gigs as the company's "garage band". When our singer moved out of town, Garry (aka: Mr. "I know a thousand musicians"), got Sherry in the picture and Sherry got us our first paying gig as Loose Change.

Q. What's the significance of the name Loose Change ?

A. Well, you'll just have to come check us out and put it together yourself!

Q. Who's your favourite band member ?

A. That's no fair. Sherry. . .well because shes's the boss. Garry because his sarcasm is our comic relief (and if I say I don't like him, we'll have nowhere to practice). And Michel because he's the most like me in the band (ie: when Sherry and Garry start jamming a new tune during practice, Michel and I look at eachother and ask "Ever heard this song before?"... and the answer is usually "NO... take note; we gotta learn it!".)

Q. What are your musical influences ?

A. Before Loose Change, I would never listen to SRV, Rolling Stones, Journey, U2.. . basically all the stuff we play today. The most exposure to rock that I had was KISS and REO Speedwagon (And they're still among my favourites). Today, my musical horizons have pretty much been expanded by a bjillion %. There's still some songs that we play that I don't like. Oddly enough though, there's very little from KISS or REO Speedwagon that we play ... despite their popular demand. But hey, I'm not the boss.

Q. Favourite drummer ?

A. The first guy I ever listened to with a critical ear was Buddy Rich. He's a legend. To me, one of the signs of a good drummer is what he (or she - female drummers are HOT, HOT, HOT!) can do with a little kit. Anyone can get a decent solo out of a double kick with 25 toms and cymbals, but give them just a snare, one tom, one kick and 2 cymbals, and see what they can produce. It's called technique. Who's my favourite living drummer? That's gotta be Ghost Rider. I know he has a huge kit, but he also has technique, and that's the ultimate combo!
